AI Robot Enters Operating Room as Kazakhstan Boosts Orthopedic Care

Kazakhstan has taken another step toward high-tech healthcare with the National Scientific Traumatology and Orthopedics Center in Astana introducing a new robotic system equipped with artificial intelligence to enhance the planning and execution of orthopedic surgeries.

The advanced equipment was handed over with the participation of the Ambassador of India to Kazakhstan, Shri Y. K. Sailas Thangal, who highlighted the steady progress in Kazakhstan–India cooperation on medical technologies and expressed readiness to further expand the exchange of expertise in this field, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

Center director Olzhas Bekarissov said the introduction of the MISSO robotic system will significantly improve the precision of surgical procedures and make advanced orthopedic care more accessible to patients nationwide.

According to the Healthcare Ministry, about 18,000 joint replacement surgeries are performed annually in Kazakhstan, while actual demand exceeds 120,000 operations. Officials say the adoption of robotic technologies will help raise treatment quality, ensure greater standardization, and narrow this gap.

The development comes as the government plans to revise funding approaches in healthcare and education. Kazakhstan has already signaled its ambitions in medical innovation: in November, surgeons in Astana carried out the country’s first robot-assisted heart surgery—also the first of its kind in Central Asia—at the Medical Center Hospital of the Presidential Affairs Administration.
