Kazakhstan Celebrates Milestone as First Heart Transplant Patient Recovers

A 34-year-old man who underwent Kazakhstan’s first-ever heart transplant at the Almaty City Cardiology Center in November has been discharged in stable condition.

The patient, who was suffering from end-stage chronic heart failure, had been registered on the national heart transplant waiting list, The Caspian Post reported via Kazakh media.

The landmark operation, which lasted more than five hours, was carried out by a multidisciplinary medical team from Almaty in cooperation with specialists from the University Medical Center (UMC) in Astana. The surgery was led by Yermagambet Kuatbayev and Professor Yuri Pya.

The donor was a 50-year-old woman who died after a stroke caused by severe arterial hypertension. Following confirmation of brain death and with the consent of her family, the organ donation process was successfully completed.

After his discharge, the patient will continue to receive regular medical supervision, with all treatment and follow-up procedures fully covered by the state. Expressing gratitude to the doctors, he also shared a personal warning about the dangers of excessive energy drink consumption, which he said contributed to his condition.

“I want to warn people: don’t drink energy drinks. It started with one a day, then 8–10 daily. I didn’t think anything of it until I got seriously ill. I’m alive thanks to the doctors. Take care of your health,” he said.
