ISLAMABAD: A 22-year-old man from Faisalabad has been arrested for the murder of 17-year-old social media influencer Sana Yousaf, who was fatally shot inside her home in Islamabad on June 2. Sana, who had a large following on TikTok and Instagram, was targeted after the suspect faced repeated rejections from her.
The Islamabad Police acted swiftly, making the arrest just a day after the tragic incident.
Details of the Murder and Investigation
According to the first information report (FIR) filed by Sana’s mother, Farzana Yousaf, a man armed with a pistol suddenly entered their home and shot Sana twice in the chest.
Despite immediate medical attention, Sana succumbed to her injuries.
The mother and her sister-in-law were present during the attack and identified the suspect.
The police described the suspect as having a moderate physique, wearing black clothing, and having no steady source of income.
The investigation revealed that the accused had persistently tried to contact Sana, both online and in person. On her birthday, May 29, he spent several hours attempting to meet her but was rejected. Similar attempts were made the day before the murder, leading to a fatal confrontation.
The police recovered the murder weapon and Sana’s mobile phone, which the suspect had tried to destroy to remove evidence.
Social Media Influencers and Safety Concerns in Pakistan
Sana was a prominent figure on social media, with nearly 800,000 followers on TikTok and around 500,000 on Instagram.
Her tragic death has raised alarm about the safety risks faced by influencers, especially young women, in Pakistan. Despite the popularity of platforms like TikTok, the app has faced multiple bans in the country due to concerns over content. Authorities continue to monitor and regulate social media to protect users.
Islamabad Police and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi have assured the public of a thorough investigation and justice for Sana Yousaf.
The arrest sends a strong message that crimes against social media personalities will be taken seriously.
