Noor Zaman Qualifies for Main Draw of British Open

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani squash star Noor Zaman has made history by qualifying for the main draw of the prestigious British Open, held in Birmingham. After a fierce contest, Zaman secured his place by defeating Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey 3-1 in the qualifiers, marking a significant milestone for Pakistani squash after a 20-year gap.
Historic Win and Competitive Match
Noor Zaman, ranked 44th in the world, showcased remarkable skill and focus throughout the 46-minute match at the Solihull Arden Club. He started strong, winning the first two games 11-5 and 11-8. Despite losing the third game 3-11 to El Torkey, Zaman regained control in the fourth game, pulling ahead 11-7 to seal the match. The two players had recently faced off a month earlier during the U23 World Championship in Pakistan, where Zaman also emerged victorious in a thrilling 3-2 comeback win.

The main draw of the British Open starts on May 31, with Zaman set to face England’s Curtis Malik on June 1. Alongside Zaman, other qualifiers include Emyr Evans from Wales, Egypt’s Moustafa Elsirty, and South Africa’s Dewald van Niekerk. The tournament is a Diamond level event with a total prize fund of $348,500 for both men and women, attracting top talent from around the globe.
