Kazakhstan sets March 15 Referendum on new Constitution

Kazakhstan is heading toward a major political milestone after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree scheduling a nationwide referendum on a new Constitution for March 15, 2026.

The move marks a key phase in the country’s ongoing political transformation, placing the proposed constitutional framework directly before the public, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

According to the decree, the Central Election Commission will oversee preparations and conduct of the nationwide vote, serving as the Central Referendum Commission. Territorial and precinct election commissions will also take on referendum duties to ensure the process is carried out across the country.

The government, in coordination with the Central Election Commission and other central and local executive bodies, has been directed to take all necessary steps to ensure the referendum is held smoothly and in accordance with the law.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting at the presidential residence, where President Tokayev met members of the Constitutional Commission, including its Chair and Constitutional Court head Elvira Azimova, Deputy Chair and State Counselor Erlan Karin, and Commission member and Presidential Assistant for Legal Issues Yerzhan Zhiyenbayev.
