Kyrgyzstan Cracks Down on Officials after Karakol School Violence

Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security (GKNB) has taken disciplinary action against officials in Karakol’s law enforcement and education sectors for failing to properly perform their duties.

The investigation was launched following a complaint submitted to GKNB Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Kamchybek Tashiev by a representative of the parent committee of Grade 9 “A” at Secondary School No. 7. The complaint cited repeated incidents of violence at the school, The Caspian Post reported, citing Kyrgyz media.

The inquiry found that responsible authorities had failed to carry out sufficient preventive work with minors and had not adequately fulfilled their obligations to reduce juvenile crime or promote moral and spiritual education among young people.

Based on the GKNB’s findings, the head of the Karakol city education department and the city’s juvenile affairs inspector were dismissed. Several other police and municipal officials were subjected to disciplinary measures, including reprimands, strict reprimands, and declarations of partial unsuitability for their positions.

In addition, pupils from Secondary School No. 7 and one college student have been placed under special police supervision.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, the GKNB recommended that the Ministry of Education, the Presidential Representative Office in Issyk-Kul Region, the Karakol city administration, the regional police department, and other relevant bodies introduce additional preventive measures, strengthen educational and mentorship programs, and ensure effective implementation of the state crime prevention concept for 2022–2028.
