Iran Warns Strait of Hormuz Could Close if US Conflict Breaks Out

Any potential military confrontation between the United States and Iran would pose a serious threat to global energy security and could lead to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian official has warned.

Jalal Dehghani Firouzabadi, secretary of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, said on Thursday that if war were to erupt in the region, energy supplies would be placed at risk and the key maritime passage could be shut down, The Caspian Post reported, citing Iran International.

He added that such a development would carry far-reaching consequences, particularly for China.

According to Firouzabadi, China would be the first country to feel the impact of a closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a factor he said explains Beijing’s opposition to the prospect of war in the region.
