Pakistan, Azerbaijan Deepen Defence Partnership After High-Level Naval Talks

Pakistan and Azerbaijan have agreed to further strengthen and broaden their bilateral defence cooperation following high-level naval talks in Islamabad.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Commander of the Azerbaijan Naval Forces Rear Admiral Shahin Mammadov at Naval Headquarters.

Both naval leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, the regional maritime security environment, and opportunities to expand cooperation in training and defence. The visiting commander was also briefed on Pakistan Navy’s ongoing projects.

Pakistan and Azerbaijan share long-standing brotherly ties marked by close naval collaboration. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Rear Admiral Mammadov’s visit is expected to further enhance defence cooperation between the two countries, particularly between their navies.

Earlier, upon his arrival at Naval Headquarters, the Azerbaijani naval chief was welcomed by Admiral Naveed Ashraf, where a smartly turned-out Pakistan Navy contingent presented a Guard of Honour. He also laid a floral wreath at the Shuhada’s Monument.

The development follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, where both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including defence, energy, trade, investment, and regional connectivity. Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir was also present at the meeting held on November 7, 2025.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding collaboration. The prime minister also thanked President Aliyev for inviting him to Azerbaijan’s Victory Day celebrations marking the country’s victory in the 44-day Karabakh Liberation War against Armenia.
