Rahmon, Wang Yi Hold High-Level Talks to Deepen Tajikistan–China Strategic Partnership

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to advance the rapidly expanding strategic cooperation between the two countries, the presidential press service reported.

Rahmon reaffirmed that China remains one of Tajikistan’s most important economic, trade, and investment partners, playing a leading role in the country’s foreign economic agenda. He stressed the need to further strengthen wide-ranging collaboration within the Tajik–Chinese strategic partnership.

The president also pointed to the positive outcomes of his recent meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling them pivotal in shaping bilateral relations this year.

Wang Yi praised Tajikistan’s progress under Rahmon’s leadership, saying he was confident in the country’s continued development. “Rapid development is visible everywhere. As the founder of your state and the Leader of the Nation, you prioritize your people and their well-being. We highly value your governance model,” he said.

Talks covered political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation, with both sides expressing satisfaction over the strong performance of existing bilateral mechanisms. They also discussed China’s new global initiatives, including its Global Governance concept.

Two-way trade surpassed $2 billion in the first ten months of 2025, with cooperation spanning mining, transport, energy, agriculture, and other strategic sectors. Both countries voiced interest in expanding collaboration in the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and green technology.

Tajikistan also expressed intent to boost agricultural exports to China, seeking greater market access and a broader product range.

Security cooperation featured prominently, with both sides reaffirming joint efforts against terrorism, extremism, religious radicalism, cybercrime, drug trafficking, and other transnational threats.

Rahmon thanked China for its scholarships for Tajik students and called for expanding such opportunities, especially in high-demand fields.

The meeting also reviewed cooperation within international and regional bodies, particularly the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Rahmon thanked Beijing for supporting the SCO Anti-Drug Center in Dushanbe and discussed strengthening multilateral mechanisms in the Central Asia–China format.

According to Xinhua, Rahmon noted that the Tajikistan–China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership has grown rapidly in recent years, adding that China is now Tajikistan’s largest trading partner and biggest source of investment. He reaffirmed Tajikistan’s adherence to the one-China principle and highlighted China’s increasingly influential global role.
