Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan move toward 60-Day Visa-Free Travel

Tajikistan has taken another step toward easing cross-border travel with Kyrgyzstan after its parliament approved an agreement allowing citizens of both countries to stay for up to 60 days without mandatory registration.

On January 9, the Majlisi Namoyandagon, Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament, ratified the agreement signed with Kyrgyzstan on February 1, 2018, according to Tajik media cited by The Caspian Post.

The decision was reported by the parliamentary newspaper Sadoi Mardum. It remains unclear whether Kyrgyzstan’s parliament has completed the ratification process.

Presenting the document to lawmakers, First Deputy Interior Minister Abdurahmon Alamshozoda said the agreement aims to strengthen friendly relations, simplify cross-border travel, and create more comfortable conditions for citizens staying in each other’s countries. The deal outlines rules for temporary stays, specifies acceptable entry documents, and exempts travelers from registering with local authorities during the agreed period.

While Alamshozoda did not specify the exact duration of the visa-free stay during his presentation, clarification later came from MP Shuhrat Ghanizoda, who confirmed that Tajik and Kyrgyz citizens will be able to remain in each other’s territory for up to 60 days without registration.

Ghanizoda said clearer travel rules would help better protect the rights and legal interests of citizens on both sides.

The move follows a major breakthrough in bilateral relations. In March 2025, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov signed a historic border agreement in Bishkek, resolving long-standing disputes that had claimed dozens of lives. The two leaders also reopened border crossings that had been closed for more than four years, restoring cross-border movement. The border deal was ratified by both parliaments on March 18–19, marking a new chapter in Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan relations.
