ISLAMABAD: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney faced criticism over his decision to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 summit in Alberta.
Carney emphasized that while concerns exist, Canada must separate its relationship with India from the individual leader.
He highlighted Indiaโs importance as the worldโs fifth-largest economy and the crucial role it plays in global issues to be discussed at the summit from June 15-17.
Controversy Over Sikh Activistโs Murder
The invitation has sparked backlash, especially in Canadaโs Sikh community.
Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal, representing Surrey, B.C., where Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in 2023, voiced his concerns directly to Carney.
Canada has linked Nijjarโs murder to the Indian government, and four Indian nationals in Canada have been charged in connection with the killing.
Despite this, Carney refrained from commenting on Modiโs alleged role, citing ongoing legal investigations.
He said, โThere is a legal process that is literally underway and quite advanced in Canada,โ and it would be inappropriate to comment further.
Strategic Importance of India
Carney stressed the strategic significance of India beyond the controversy.
As the most populous country and a key player in global supply chains, Indiaโs participation in discussions on energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals is essential.
Though Modiโs supporters claim India is now the worldโs fourth-largest economy, Carney maintained India remains fifth globally.
Modi accepted the invitation and expressed optimism about strengthening India-Canada ties, emphasizing mutual respect and shared democratic values.
