Iran Pushes for Diversified Rail Transit with Turkmenistan

Iran is seeking to transport a broader range of goods through Turkmenistan instead of depending on a single commodity, The Caspian Post reports.
Jabbar Ali Zakeri, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Executive Director of the Iranian Railways Company, said Turkmenistan’s sulfur exports vary from year to year. In some years, sulfur is shipped in transit via Iran’s rail network, while in others exports halt entirely, leading to sharp fluctuations in transit volumes and undermining the stability of Iran’s transit revenues.
Zakeri noted that Iran’s institutional strength in rail diplomacy enables it to replace sulfur with alternative cargoes, ensuring continued use of transit routes. This flexibility, he said, reinforces Iran’s position not only as a transit country but also as a regional logistics operator.
He added that Iran aims to deepen railway cooperation with Turkmenistan within the frameworks of the International North–South Transport Corridor and the International East–West Transport Corridor.
